Dr. McDonald

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what are the latest available figures for the number of large companies paying more than £3,500 per month in pay-as-you-earn and national insurance contributions, owing payments from two months and the amount of income involved.

Mr. Moore

[pursuant to his reply, 6 February 1984, c. 437–8]: Figures for companies are not separately available. At 25 January 1984 the number of all employers due to pay over £3,500 a month in respect of PAYE and national insurance contributions and owing more than two months' remittances for the deduction year 1983–84 was 3,571 and the estimated amount of tax and National Insurance Contributions involved was £277 million.

[pursuant to his reply, 6 February 1984, c. 438]: Figures for small companies are not separately available but at 25 January 1984 the number of all employers due to pay less than £3,500 a month for PAYE and national insurance contributions and owing more than two months' remittances for the year 1983–84 was 243,800; the estimated amount of tax and national insurance contributions involved was £391 million.
