asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much of the mortgage interest relief for the current financial year to date has been given (a) under mortgage interest relief at source, and (b) by allowance against income.

Of the estimated total mortgage interest relief for the year 1983–84, nearly £1,900 million had been paid under mortgage interest relief at source by 31 January 1984 and about £300 million by allowance against income.
