asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many staff were employed in each of the central Government Departments in Northern Ireland at (a) 1 December 1982 and (b) 1 December 1983; and how this compares with May 1979.

Notes: (1) The figures for 1 May 1979 are not directly comparable in all cases with those for later years because of the reorganisation of Northern Ireland central Government Departments in 1982. The reorganisation combined the Departments of Finance and the Civil Service into the Department of Finance and Personnel, the Departments of Commerce and Manpower Services into the department of Economic Development, and transferred various functions of the then Department of Finance to other Northern Ireland departments.

(2) The figures for the Departments of agriculture and Environment for May 1979 exclude 1,281 and 488 staff, respectively, who were employed on the temporary urban and renewal improvement compaign.

(3) The figures for the Northern Ireland Office include staf serving in the Northern Ireland Office in London and exclude from ! dEcember 1982 243 staff transferred tothe Probation Board for Northern Ireland.
