Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many families were (a) eligible for and (b) drawing family income supplement in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983.

Mr. Newton

The latest estimate of the number of families eligible for but not receiving family income supplement is still that derived from the family finances survey 1979, indicating that about half those eligible take up the supplement.

The latest date for which figures are available for the number of recipients of FIS is September 1983. the following table gives the figures at the end of September of each year for which information has been requested.
