Mr. Hordern

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many people are employed at his Department's offices in Newcastle; and what is the cost of their remuneration.

Mr. Newton

A total of 11,611 on 1 February 1984, the great majority of them being employed in the Department's Newcastle central office and its out-stations. We estimate that the cost of their remuneration (including employer's national insurance costs) is £74.4 million a year.
