§ Mr. Tom Clarkeasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will publish in the Official Report the letter of 30 January to the hon. Member for Monklands, West from the hon. Member for Shoreham (Mr. Luce) on the training of Indonesian service men.
§ Mr. LuceThe text is as follows
In the exchange in the House on 25 January about human rights in Indonesia I undertook to look into your question about the training of Indonesian soldiers in this country.I am informed that there are at present four Indonesian officers on courses in the United Kingdom. They consist of one Army officer, two Naval officers and one Air Force officer. Such training courses are quite normal in our relations with friendly countries and serve a useful incidental purpose in strengthening Anglo-Indonesian relations.I do not think that such a limited provision of training need arouse any apprehensions on the part of Indonesia's neighbours".
