HC Deb 07 February 1984 vol 53 c552W
38. Mr. Eastham

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will estimate the proportion of local education authorities' spending which is taken up by youth training schemes.

Sir Keith Joseph

The youth training scheme—YTS—is funded by the Manpower Services Commission. Comparative figures relating YTS expenditure in educational establishments to total LEA expenditure are not readily available.

39. Mr. O'Brien

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science when he will next meet the chairman of the Manpower Services Commission to discuss local education authority involvement in youth training schemes.

Sir Keith Joseph

The Department of Education and Science and the Manpower Services Commission communicate regularly at all levels about the youth training scheme, to which LEAs make an important contribution.

42. Mr. Litherland

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how the recent cutbacks, announced by the Secretary of State for Employment, to mode B of the youth training scheme will affect the number of trainees based in further education colleges; and if he will estimate the financial effects of the reduction on further education institutions.

Sir Keith Joseph

It is too early to say how the expected balance of YTS programme places for 1984£85 will affect the colleges of further education.
