Mr. Boyes

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will provide tables showing the amount of Government grant to Sunderland borough council for each year from 1979 to 1984, at 1979 prices; and if he will express the figures as a percentage of the borough's total spending.

* The figures for 1979–80 and 1980–81 comprise the needs and resources and domestic elements; none of these grants was paid to the County Council. For later years, the figures comprise block grant and domestic rate relief grant, block grant was paid also to the County Council in respect of its expenditure. The figures for the later years are not comparable to those for 1979–80 and 1980–81.
