HC Deb 07 February 1984 vol 53 c544W
Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many 1983 school leavers are still without a job or on temporary employment schemes in Birmingham.

Mr. Peter Morrison

[pursuant to his reply, 3 February 1984, c. 391]: 17,000 16-year-olds were eligible to leave school in Birmingham in 1983. Of those whose whereabouts were known to the careers service on 12 January, 4,050 had continued at school, 2,500 had entered further education and 2,360 had entered employment. On the same date, the great majority of the 6,990 school leavers of all ages participating in the youth training scheme (and other Government schemes) and the 2,420 who were unemployed were thought to be 16-year-old 1983 school leavers.
