asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether there is any pipe-laying barge capacity in the United Kingdom owned and operated by British companies.

There are no pipelay barges owned and operated by British companies.

Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether there is capacity in the United Kingdom for producing the broad range of special steels required for North sea development owned and operated by British companies; and if he will specify any areas of deficiency.

I have been asked to reply.

United Kingdom industry is generally able to provide the broad range of steels required for North sea developments. There are no significant areas of deficiency. The Offshore Supplies Office maintains a regular dialogue with the industry to ensure it is aware of changing demands.
