HC Deb 07 February 1984 vol 53 cc552-3W
43. Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he is satisfied that the level of education will be maintained in Merseyside in 1984–85.

Mr. Dunn

It is for the five authorities with education responsibilities in Merseyside to decide on the resources they are going to make available for education taking account of local needs and circumstances and the Government's policies. In 1984–85 the level of service which the authorities will be able to provide if they spend at their expenditure targets will depend critically on their ability to contain their costs, and in particular on the level of pay settlements for local authority employees in the coming months and their ability to make further improvements in efficiency.
