HC Deb 06 February 1984 vol 53 cc492-3W
Mr. Hunter

asked the Secretary of State for Employment, further to the answer of 30 January, Official Report, c. 25–26, what are the criteria for deciding whether an applicant for a job beyond daily travelling distance from his or her home who applies to receive assistance in meeting the costs of attending an interview for such a job has no reasonable prospects of obtaining employment in his or her home area; and by whom such a decision is made.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The prospects of obtaining employment in the home area are assessed by jobcentre staff, taking account of the availability of the jobs in the home area for which the applicant has the required abilities, qualifications and experience and the availability of jobs in the home area similar to the job for which the applicant is being interviewed.

Mr. Hunter

asked the Secretary of State for Employment, further to the answer of 30 January, Official Report, c. 25–26, how much advance notice is required when an unemployed jobseeker wishes to apply for assistance in meeting the costs of attending an interview for a job when the place of interview is beyond daily travelling distance from his or her home.

Mr. Peter Morrison

An application on the official form must be received at a jobcentre before the applicant travels to the interview.
