HC Deb 06 February 1984 vol 53 cc443-4W
22. Mr. Knowles

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what representations he has received on the need for better lighting on motorways.

Mrs. Chalker

I have received representations from the Royal Automobile Club, the Association of Street Lighting Contractors and the Lighting Industry Federation asking for information about and pressing for more motorway lighting.

The Department's policy for lighting on motorways is not to light them throughout but where it is judged that there are considerations which make night driving difficult or even hazardous (such as in an area prone to frequent fog or at very complex interchanges), then lighting is provided at these locations at the construction stage. If a night accident problem develops after the motorway is open then lighting is provided if an economic case can be made.

The Department will be issuing further guidance on the assessment of road lighting schemes including motorways after consultation with the appropriate authorities.
