HC Deb 06 February 1984 vol 53 cc498-9W
Mr. Norman Hogg

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what action he proposes in 1984 to reduce unemployment in Cumbernauld new town amongst 16 to 18-year-olds.

Mr. Allan Stewart

The Government have invested considerable resources in the youth training scheme, which is available for unemployed 16 year olds, and some 17 year old, school leavers. In Cumbernauld new town there are currently some 277 young people on the scheme and their employment prospects will be enhanced as a result. For one year from April 1984, eligibility for the young workers scheme will be limited to 17 year olds, providing an opportunity for progression from the youth training scheme. The 16–18 year old age group in Cumbernauld should also benefit if the encouraging net gain of over 1,000 jobs in the new town during the first 8 months of the current financial year can be continued in 1984.

Mr. Norman Hogg

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many new jobs were created in Cumbernauld new town in the past 12 months; and how many were lost in the same period.

Mr. Allan Stewart

Estimates by Cumbernauld Development Corporation of the number of industrial jobs created or lost in the 12 months ended on 30 September 1983, the latest period for which figures are available, were as follows:

Number
Jobs created 1,081
Jobs lost 680
