The number of companies removed from the register each year is much greater than the number of company liquidations but cannot be taken as an indicator of the number ceasing to trade in that year.
Similarly, the number of new companies registered in a year does not necessarily correspond with the number starting to trade.
There is no official analysis by more detailed geographical areas and an analysis by industry is only available for compulsory plus creditors' voluntary liquidations for England and Wales and Scotland. For 1982 this was published in "Companies in 1982". Figures for England and Wales for the first three quarters of 1983 (the fourth is not yet available) were published in British business 27 January 1984 Table 3 on page 169.
