HC Deb 03 February 1984 vol 53 c383W
Mr. Nicholas Brown

asked the Attorney-General what mechanism there is for making representations for nomination of individuals to (a) the advisory panel and (b) the interviewing panel for magistrates in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne.

The Attorney-General

Representations may be made to the Lord Chancellor.

Mr. Nicholas Brown

asked the Attorney-General if he will publish the membership of the interviewing panel for prospective magistrates in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne; and how many panel members normally attend each interview.

The Attorney-General

It is not the practice to publish the names of persons who interview candidates for appointment as magistrates on behalf of advisory comittees. The normal number of interviewers in the Newcastle upon Tyne area is three.

Mr. Nicholas Brown

asked the Attorney-General why there is a separate interviewing panel for prospective magistrates whose membership is not conterminous with the membership of the advisory committee for Newcastle upon Tyne.

The Attorney-General

The selection of interviewers is in the discretion of each advisory committee.
