HC Deb 03 February 1984 vol 53 c397W
Mr. Boyes

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many animals die in Government research stations daily by species; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mellor

Information is not available in the form requested. The only available statistics are of the number of experiments carried out under the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876, started in a particular year. The latest available information, which is for 1982, was published in "Statistics of experiments on living animals, Great Britain, 1982" (Cmnd. 8986): the analyses by type of registered place given in tables 12, 13 and 20 may be of interest.
