Mr. Fisher

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what interest the British Gas Corporation has received on its negative external financing limits loans to Her Majesty's Government since 1981;

(2) what is the level of outstanding loans from the British Gas Corporation to Her Majesty's Government; and what interest was received by the corporation on those loans in the last year for which records are available.

[pursuant to his reply, 2 February 1984, c. 309]: In 1979 and 1980 the British Gas Corporation deposited a total of £300 million with the National Loans Fund. BGC received interest on these deposits of £41.8 million in both 1981–82 and 1982–83. BGC have made no further deposits with the National Loans Fund apart from temporary deposits in 1983 under the new temporary deposit facility. There are currently no such deposits outstanding.
