HC Deb 02 February 1984 vol 53 cc304-5W
Mr. Mudd

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer in what cases financial assistance has been given by the Government to redundancy schemes for the reduction of surplus staff in organisations other than the Civil Service; and what amounts have been involved in each case during the past 10 years.

Mr. Peter Rees

Statutory redundancy payments to employers other than the Civil Service in each of the last 10 years are as follows:

£ million cash
1973–74 29
1974–75 43
1975–76 95
1976–77 80
1977–78 67
1978–79 76
1979–80 95
1980–81 237
1981–82 368
1982–83 307
1983–84* 306
* Estimated.

Note: The figures cover payments to employers under sections 104 and 105 of the Employment Protection (Consolidation) Act 1978.

Details of other Government contributions towards redundancy payments are not, however, held centrally, and could not be provided without a disproportionate expenditure of time and resources.
