asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will set a target date for the ending of straw burning.

It would be impracticable to consider a target date for the ending of straw burning until there is a reasonable prospect of sufficient viable alternative uses being available for the 5 million or 6 million tonnes of surplus straw produced annually.
