HC Deb 02 February 1984 vol 53 c348W
Mrs. Dunwoody

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he is satisfied as to the safety of salt substitues now on sale without prescription.

Mr. John Patten

The desirability or otherwise of the use by the population at large of salt substitutes, in which the sodium chloride of common salt has been partly or wholly replaced with potassium chloride, is currently being considered by the panel on diet and cardiovascular disease set up by the Chief Medical Officer's Committee on medical aspects of food policy. The panel's report is expected later this year. The evidence available so far would indicate that for the general healthy population normal domestic use of such products does not represent a hazard to health.
