HC Deb 02 February 1984 vol 53 c281W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will estimate the actual and projected night-time traffic accidents on the M25 now and when completely opened.

Mrs. Chalker

[pursuant to her reply, 26 January 1984, c. 687]: The available figures are as follows:

Accidents by severity on the M25: 1982 and 1983 between 10 pm and 6 am
Fatal Serious Slight All
1982
January to October 2 3 5
November to December
1983 (Provisional)
Janary to October 3 9 12

The increase in accidents partly reflects the increase in the length of the motorway in use between 1982 and 1983. When complete, the total annual traffic on the M25 will be around four to five times the total 1983 vehicle kilometres. Accident numbers could therefore increase.
