Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will indicate, for the latest convenient date, the number of people who, over the preceding 12-month period, crossed, in both directions, the border between Hong Kong at Lo Wu and the Guangdong Province at Shenzhen.

In the 12 months ended 31 December 1983, 5,089,000 people entered Hong Kong at Lo Wu. In the same period 4,839,000 people entered China via Lo Wu.
