HC Deb 01 February 1984 vol 53 c210W
Mr. Rooker

asked the Prime Minister if, pursuant to her reply to the hon. Member for Birmingham, Perry Barr on 23 January, Official Report, c. 380, concerning reasons for increases in taxes, she will give details of the extra income tax and expenditure taxes raised as a result of the figures she gave; and what proportion these form of the increased tax burden since 1978–79.

The Prime Minister

For a man on average male earnings, the increase in income tax—less child benefit where appropriate—national insurance contributions and indirect taxes attributable to real earnings growth since 1978–79 is about £6 a week at 1983–84 prices. Depending on family circumstances, this represents about two-thirds to three-quarters of the corresponding total real increase.
