HC Deb 01 February 1984 vol 53 c208W
Mr. Chris Smith

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the marginal rate of tax applicable to a family with an income of (a) £80 per week, and (b) £800 per week.

Mr. Moore

[pursuant to his reply, 31 January 1984, c. 165]: Assuming that the husband is the sole earner and that he has no allowances or reliefs other than the married man's allowance, the information for 1983–84 is as follows:

(a) (b)
Marginal rate (percentage) on an additional £ of:
Earned income 30 60
Unearned income 30 *75
* Assuming at least £7,100 of unearned income in 1983–84; otherwise the marginal rate would be 60 per cent.
