HC Deb 01 February 1984 vol 53 c256W
Ms. Harman

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many coronary artery bypass operations per million of the population in (a)England and (b)the area covered by the South-East Thames regional health authority were carried out in the most recent year for which figures are available; and how many he estimates will be carried out in 1984.

Mr. John Patten

Information is not available in the form requested. I understand that the number of coronary artery bypass grafts reported to the United Kingdom cardiac surgery register of the Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons in 1981 — the latest date for which figures are available—were 5,951 or 106.3 per million of the United Kingdom population. This represents a 22.5 per cent. increase over the 1980 figure of 4,859 operations—86.8 per million of the population.
