Mr. Bruce

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many deaf and partially-hearing young people are currently continuing their education after the age of 16 years in schools and units for deaf and partially-hearing children.

Sir Keith Joseph

In January 1983, there were 378 pupils aged 16 years and over, who were deaf or partially-hearing and who attended special schools in England. Information on those in designated special classes or units of maintained primary and secondary schools is not available.

Mr. Bruce

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) how many deaf and partially-hearing young people who left schools and units for hearing-impaired children in 1982 and 1983 are (a) undergoing further and higher education and (b) on youth training schemes;

(2) how many deaf and partially-hearing young people left schools and units for hearing-impaired children in 1982 and 1983.
