HC Deb 01 February 1984 vol 53 cc236-7W
Mr. Tony Lloyd

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how much public money has been spent on research on cystic fibrosis for each year from 1979; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Brooke

The primary responsibility for publicly funded biomedial research lies with the Medical Research Council. The total support by the council for research into cystic fibrosis in the last four financial years is:

Year £
1979–80 96,000
1980–81 92,000
1981–82 202,000
1982–83 195,000

The MRC is supporting other research which may prove relevant to this condition and will always welcome soundly based proposals for research relevant to cystic fibrosis. Research is also carried out in universities and medical schools, but I cannot say what the total cost of such research may be.
