HC Deb 21 December 1984 vol 70 c392W
Dr. Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if the European Community directive in the conservation of wild birds (79/409) will apply to the Canary Islands, Madeira, the Azores and the Chafarine; and if these island groups will be defined as being part of the European territory of Spain and Portugal.

Mr. Rifkind

The European Economic Community directive on the conservation of wild birds will aplly to Madeira and the Azores and to Ceuta and Melilla (with which the Chafarine Islands are associated) by virtue of the terms of Spanish and Portuguese accession to the Community. Negotiations are still in progress on the status of the Canary Islands.
