HC Deb 21 December 1984 vol 70 c404W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will give a breakdown of the 900 new posts which will be created in the bodies which will take over certain functions currently performed by the Greater London council and metropolitan county councils after their proposed abolition; which specific bodies will be accommodating these new posts; and what will be the range of their levels of pay.

Sir George Young

The figure of 900 given in the explanatory and financial memorandum to the Local Government Bill derives from an estimate of the present number of posts in the services that are to be transferred to non-departmental bodies, ie the Arts Council, the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission, the Thames water authority, and a trustee body to be set up for Merseyside museums and art galleries. It will, in general, be for those bodies to determine in due course the precise numbers, grades and pay of the staff they take on.
