Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total Government expenditure for 1983 and 1984; and what percentage of gross domestic product this represents for those years.

Mr. Peter Rees

The 1984 "Autumn Statement" showed estimated outturn for the public expenditure planning total in 1983–84 of £120.3 billion and in 1984–85 of nearly £128 billion. This represents about 42½ per cent. of GDP in each year.
