HC Deb 20 December 1984 vol 70 cc282-3W
15. Mr. Pike

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many applications to visit the United Kingdom were refused entry certificates or admission at ports of entry; and what proportion was from the Indian subcontinent.

Mr. Waddington

In the first nine months of this year, 540 people were refused prior entry clearance as visitors in the Indian subcontinent. No figures are available for applications made in other countries.

In the same period, a total of 13,400 passengers were refused leave to enter the United Kingdom at ports, of whom 21 per cent. were citizens of countries in the Indian subcontinent. Figures are not separately available for those seeking entry as visitors.
