HC Deb 20 December 1984 vol 70 c318W
Mr. Madel

asked the Minister for the Civil Service whether he will ensure that no individual will be refused employment in the Civil Service and no civil servant will be sacked from the Civil Service because he is not a member of a trade union.

Mr. Hayhoe

Yes. Civil servants are recruited by fair and open competition on merit. The conditions of eligibility for all recruitment schemes for the Civil Service are detemined solely by the requirements for performing the duties of the post or grade. Equally, no civil servant will be dismissed for non-membership of a trade union. These are well-established principles and they are fully in line with the Government's general employment policies and legislation.
