HC Deb 20 December 1984 vol 70 cc281-2W
3. Sir Anthony Kershaw

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he intends to publish an updated version of "Protect and Survive".

Mr. Giles Shaw

Work is in hand on a replacement for "Protect and Survive". It cannot be finalised until the review of the blast and radiation effects of nuclear weapons is available. This should be early next year.

36. Mr. Hayes

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will study the Swedish equivalent to the "Protect and Survive" booklet.

Mr. Giles Shaw

We keep closely in touch with civil defence in other European countries, including Sweden. My right hon. and learned Friend is aware of and has already examined this booklet.

49. Mr. Hanley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will include information on the properties of and protection against chemical weapons in any revised edition of "Protect and Survive".

Mr. Giles Shaw

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply given on 20 November, at column 105, to a question from my hon. Friend the Member for Norwich, North (Mr. Thompson). It will be included when this work is complete.

Mr. Hunter

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what aspects of civil defence he intends to include in his new version of "Protect and Survive".

Mr. Giles Shaw

It will cover those areas of civil defence which would be of direct relevance to the public including the action the public could take for protection against the effects of hostile attack and information on these effects and the complementary action that would be taken by local and central Government.
