HC Deb 20 December 1984 vol 70 cc327-8W
Mr. Dewar

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland when the rate of pay for work done by prisoners was last reviewed; what plans he has for an uprating; and whether the current rates of pay take account of cost increases in the range of goods available for purchase by prisoners.

Mr. Younger

The rate of pay is reviewed annually, the most recent increase having been made in October. Adjustments now take account of the average increase in public sector pay rather than price movements in the range of goods available for purchase by prisoners.

Mr. Dewar

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what rates are paid to prisoners for work in prison at present; and what were the comparable figures five and 10 years ago.

Mr. Younger

The rates vary according to the type of work performed by an inmate, whether an adult or a young offender. Currently they range from a minimum flat rate of 90p per week to a maximum of £3.40 per week for piece work. Comparable figures for five years ago are 70p minimum and £2.20 maximum; and for 10 years ago 25p minimum, 96p maximum.
