HC Deb 20 December 1984 vol 70 cc297-8W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will now set up an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mrs. Norah McCabe on 9 July 1981.

Mr. Hurd

[pursuant to his reply, 7 December 1984, c. 298]: Mrs. McCabe's tragic death in 1981 has been fully investigated by the police and all the papers and relevant evidence were submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who directed that none of the officers involved should be prosecuted. Disciplinary proceedings have been considered and there has also been a coroner's inquest. I have considered carefully whether there are any issues arising from this particular case which should be examined in a further inquiry but have concluded that any such further examination would serve no useful purpose. I am concerned that plastic baton rounds should be subject to the closest control. I have reviewed the measures in force for their use. I will continue to receive reports describing the circumstances in which every round was fired. I am satisfied that the security forces are subject to strict regulations for the use of this weapon.
