HC Deb 20 December 1984 vol 70 cc313-5W
Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of the labour force has been unemployed in the county of Derbyshire for over three years, two years and one year, respectively.

Mr. Alan Clark

Following is the latest available information in respect of unemployed claimants on 11 October 1984.

Rates of long-term unemployment—Derbyshire
Duration of unemployment Per cent. of all workers*
Over three years 1.9
Over two years 3.5
Over one year 6.5
* The figures are expressed as a percentage of employees in employment, plus the unemployed. Since ward-based unemployment figures by duration corresponding exactly to county boundaries will not be available until mid 1985, the figures relate to the best fit of the travel-to-work areas and the base figures relate to 1978, rather than 1983 as for the new travel-to-work areas.

Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many unemployed (a) adults and (b) young people aged between 16 and 21 years were available for every job vacancy registered in the county of Derbyshire at the latest available date.

Mr. Alan Clark

On 11 October 1984, the latest date for which an analysis of unemployment by age is available, there was a total of 9,307 unemployed claimants aged between 16 and 19 years, and a total of 39,826 unemployed claimants aged 20 years and over in Derbyshire. On 5 October 1984 there were 76 vacancies unfilled at careers offices in Derbyshire and 1,690 unfilled vacancies at jobcentres. These figures cannot be added together because some vacancies are notified to both careers offices and jobcentres.

Ratios of unemployed persons to unfilled vacancies cannot be calculated in the form requested because vacancies at jobcentres are normally open to persons of all age groups.

Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people between the ages of 16 and 21 years were unemployed in the county of Derbyshire at the nearest available date; and what was the comparable figure at the end of 1983.

Mr. Alan Clark

Information on unemployment in the 16 to 19 and 20 to 24 years age groups for the county of Derbyshire is available in the House of Commons' Library.

Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the total number of redundancies in the county of Derbyshire in 1983 and to the nearest available date in 1984.

Mr. Alan Clark

In 1983 a total of 6,494 redundancies were confirmed as due to occur in the county of Derbyshire. During the first 10 months of 1984, the figure was 6,716 (provisional).

Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many jobs were lost in the following industries in the county of Derbyshire in 1983 and to the nearest available date in 1984: (a) metal manufacturing, (b) textiles and clothing, (c) food and drink, (d) engineering, (e) vehicle manufacturing, (f) construction and (g) furniture.

Mr. Alan Clark

The information is not available. Information on job losses is not collected. Net changes in employment in groups of industries can be supplied, but, for areas smaller than regions, only for those dates when censuses of employment are conducted. Censuses of employment have been taken triennially since 1978 and the latest results are for September 1981.

Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) what is the current level of unemployment in the county of Derbyshire compared to the national level;

(2) what is the level of female unemployment in the county of Derbyshire at the latest available date.

Mr. Alan Clark

The information requested is available in the House of Commons Library.
