asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the present number of people in prison in England and Wales for the non-payment of fines.

Mr. Mellor

About 800 fine defaulters were in prison department establishments in England and Wales on 31 October 1984, the latest date for which information is available. This figure includes those in default of payment of compensation orders and costs.
