HC Deb 20 December 1984 vol 70 cc322-3W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the average rate of growth of (a) gross national product, (b) manufacturing output, (c) productivity and (d) inflation for the following periods: (i) 1954 to 1964, (ii) 1964 to 1974, (iii) 1970 to 1974, (iv) 1974 to 1979 and (v) 1979 to 1984.

Mr. Peter Rees

Recent figures for gross national product, manufacturing output, prices and productivity are available in the November 1984 issue of Economic Trends and the 1984 edition of the "United Kingdom National Accounts". Earlier figures are published in the Economic Trends Annual Supplement, 1984 edition. Figures for the whole of 1984 will not be available until next year. Apart from the 1984 figures the only figure requested that is not readily available from these published sources is that for productivity growth between 1954 and 1964. No continuous estimates of productivity are available from official statistical publications due to changes in the coverage of the employed labour force series in 1959.
