HC Deb 20 December 1984 vol 70 cc289-90W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many people in the last year for which figures are available were remanded in custody for psychiatric reports; and what is the number so far in 1984;

(2) what is the average time taken to complete a psychiatric report on a remanded prisoner;

(3) what is the number of persons currently on remand in custody for psychiatric report.

Mr. Mellor

The information requested is not recorded centrally. Figures are available for the number of psychiatric reports prepared annually on prisoners remanded in custody for medical assessment, which would not necessarily correspond to the number of persons so remanded. There were 8,193 such reports prepared in 1983; figures for the current reporting period (which will extend to March 1985) are not yet available.
