Mr. Steel

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what further plans he has for improvements in the A7 trunk route between Edinburgh and Carlisle, following the scheme at Canonbie.

Mr. Younger

Bypasses of Dalkeith, Middleton and Langholm and a realignment of the Synton-Mossend section, each costing over £1 million, are planned. The following minor schemes (under £1 million) are also envisaged.

  • Improvement at Eskdalemuir Junction

Borders

  • Falahill-Heriot Diversion
  • Newton Farm Diversion
  • Sandbed, Hawick
  • Newmill Village
  • Parkdaill
  • South of Gilston Road

In all cases, construction will depend on the satisfactory completion of detailed investigation, design and statutory procedures and on the availability of finance.
