HC Deb 19 December 1984 vol 70 cc161-2W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what level of finance he has assessed that local education authorities should spend on youth provision in 1985 as part of their grant-related expenditure assessment figure; and if he is satisfied that local education authorities will possess adequate resources to devote funding sufficient for youth provision.

Mr. Brooke

The figure for aggregate local authority expenditure on the youth service underlying the 1985–86 RSG settlement is £104 million. This compares with a figure of £92 million underlying the 1984–85 settlement. This level of provision should allow authorities to continue to support the particular role of the youth service in overall provision for young people. It is, however, for individual authorities to decide on their expenditure priorities within the overall level of resources available.
