HL Deb 19 December 1984 vol 458 cc720-1WA
Lord O'Hagan

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in accordance with previous practice, they will now publish a comparative table showing the salary and allowances of Members of the European Parliament and Members of the House of Commons.

The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Minister for the Arts (The Earl of Gowrie)

I provided my noble friend with details of the salary and allowances of Members of the House of Commons on 3rd December (Official Report,Vol. 457, cols. 1205–1206). As I explained in my earlier reply, the salaries of Members of the European Parliament are determined and paid by member states at national rates. United Kingdom MEPs receive the same salary as a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons (£16,106 per annum). Dual mandate Members receive one-third (£5,369) in addition. The allowances of Members of the European Parliament are determined and paid directly by the European Parliament itself. Information on the allowances payable to Members of the European Parliament is not held centrally. However, the United Kingdom Office of the European Parliament have been able to supply material on the expenses and allowances of Members of the European Parliament, and I am arranging for this to be placed in the Library of the House.

Lord Stoddart of Swindon

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Following the reply given to Lord O'Hagan by the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Minister for the Arts on Monday, 3rd December 1984 (cols. 1205 and 1206) and, as allowances payable to, and expenses which may be claimed by, Members of the European Assembly are paid for in part by moneys voted by Parliament, whether they will not publish in the Official Report details of such allowances and expenses.
