Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the amount spent on the National Health Service per head of the population for the whole of the United Kingdom and per head of the working population for 1983–84.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Net spending on the National Health Service for the whole of the United Kingdom for 1983–84 excluding charges to patients, was about £285 per head of population; when spread over the working population, including the unemployed, this net spending amounted to some £605 per head.
