§ 51. Sir John Farrasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry to what extent imports of knitted goods from Portugal and Turkey, in the last available 12 month period, are in excess of that permitted in the voluntary restraint agreements.
§ Mr. ChannonThe Portuguese authorities have firmly assured the Commission that their newly introduced export management system will enable them fully to respect the levels agreed between them and the Community in respect of their exports of knitted goods for 1984. It does not appear that Portuguese export authorisations for these goods have so far exceeded those levels, but officials are keeping a close watch on these statistics together with those for actual imports into the United Kingdom this year.
There is no voluntary restraint arrangement between the Community and Turkey covering knitted goods. Quotas have been established under the safeguard provisions of the EC-Turkey association agreement on a number of knitted products and these are being fully enforced.
