§ Sir. David Priceasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how successful international contributions to Ethiopian hunger relief have been to date; how far these contributions have reached the starving people concerned; what more is required of the international community to stave off famine in Ethiopia; and what more the United Kingdom proposes to do.
§ Mr. RaisonContributions made by the international community and the public are having a definite impact, as I saw on my recent visit. Food aid shipments front present pledges now look sufficient until the end of February, and there is more to come. I believe the vast bulk of these contributions have reached those in the greatest need, though it is difficult to supply the areas where civil strife continues. We expect help to be needed until the end of 1985, but the assessment of what is required will have to be done primarily by Mr. Jansson, the United Nations special co-ordinator. We will decide what more we should do, alone or through the European Community and other agencies, in the light of his reports.
