HC Deb 18 December 1984 vol 70 c108W
33. Mr. Merchant

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what action the Health and Safety Executive is currently taking to deal with the problem of assaults suffered by employees in the course of their work.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The Health and Safety Executive has recently established a committee with interested parties and departments to consider existing measures taken by employers and possible future measures to combat the problem of violence to employees at the workplace from members of the public. The committee in particular aims to stimulate joint consideration of the problem by employers and unions in the sectors most affected. As a result, the problem is now being examined by the Health and Safety Commission's joint advisory committees on railways, education and the National Health Service; and the Department of Transport has convened a special working group to consider the problem in road passenger transport.
