HC Deb 18 December 1984 vol 70 cc143-4W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many clinical psychologists are employed within each regional health authority; and how those figures compare with the norms recommended by the Trethowan report in 1977.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Provisional numbers of clinical psychologists employed within each regional health authority as at 30 September 1983 are given in the table. In addition, a further 16 .3 whole-time equivalents were on the staff at London postgraduate teaching hospitals, giving a total for England of 1306 .6 whole-time equivalents.

The Trethowan report (1977) on the role of psychologists in the health services recommended that the number of clinical psychologists employed be increased to about 1,100 for England and Wales over a period of six to seven years, as a minimum target for the shorter term. This minimum target has been exceeded.
