Dr McDonald

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will publish in the Official Report a list of all the Government or Government-sponsored organisations concerned with the promotion of information technology, research and development into information technology, its application to industry, and the training of experts in information technology.

Mr. Butcher

In the time available the following Government or Government-sponsored organisations have been identified as being concerned on a continuing basis with the activities listed in the question:

  • Department of Trade and Industry and associated research establishments.
  • Department of Education and Science.
  • Ministry of Defence and associated research establishments. Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency, Treasury. Manpower Services Commission.
  • The Information Technology Advisory Panel.
  • The British Information Technology Export Organisation

(EXPORT IT).

  • The National Computing Centre.
  • United Kingdom AEA Harwell.
  • The Civil Service college.
  • The Federation of Microsystems Centres.
  • The University Consortium for Industrial Numerical Analysis.
  • The United Kingdom Council for Computing Development.
  • The British Standards Institute.
  • The Production Engineering Research Association.
  • The Machine Tools Industry Research Association.
  • The Engineering Industry Training Board.
  • The IT Users Standards Association.
  • The National Computer User Forum.
  • The joint networks team of the Computer Board and Research Councils.
  • The National Interactive Video Centre.
  • The Engineering Council.
  • The British Technology Group.
  • The Advisory Body of Research Councils.
  • The Advisory Council on Advanced Research and Development.
  • The Business and Technicians Education Council.
  • Information Technology Education Centres (149).
  • Science and Technology Regional Organisations (40).

In addition a large number of individual firms or other organisations receive financial support for specific projects. The Government obviously has responsibility for the funding of IT-related activities in universities and polytechnics.

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will publish in the Official Report the total amount of Government financial support for information technology for each year from 1978–79.

Mr. Butcher

The Department of Trade and Industry's financial support for electronics and information technology is published with information on other research and development support in annual DTI reports. The report for 1978–79 is entitled "Research and Development Requirements and Programmes Report"; the more recent reports are entitled "Research and Development Report". The report for 1983–84 is to be published on 31 January 1985.
