HC Deb 17 December 1984 vol 70 c23W
Mr. Kaufman

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry why in schedule 2 to the Assisted Areas Order 1984 (S.I., 1984, No. 1844), he has designated the city of Manchester intermediate area on the basis of obsolete ward boundaries, so that certain existing wards within the designated area are not listed, wards which have been abolished are listed, and certain existing wards have been designated on obsolete rather than current boundaries.

Mr. Trippier

All travel-to-work areas in England and Wales are defined by reference to 1981 census wards. The Manchester assisted area was defined so as to mesh in smoothly with those adjoining travel-to-work areas which are assisted.
